CEAP Recertification / Reinstatement

GUIDE TO CEAP® RECERTIFICATION AND REINSTATEMENT rev. 2014

The CEAP® certification must be renewed every three years. A few months before your expiration date, a recertification application packet will be mailed to you. If you have not received your recertification application mailing 30 days prior to your expiration date, please contact EACC and request that another one be sent to you.
You may recertify by either of two options:
1. Completing the PDH requirements; or
2. Retesting and passing the CEAP® exam.

1) TO RECERTIFY BY PDHS:

  • Complete sixty (60) hours of professional development/training (PDHs or qualified CEUs), including at least two (2) hours of ethics training. (The ethics training is a new requirement as of 7/1/2010.)
  • All training and professional development must be in EAP-related content areas.*
  • All training must be completed within the dates of the current three-year certification period. Trainings attended prior to the current begin date or after the current expiration date may not be used for the current recertification.
  • Appropriate documentation of completion for all trainings attended is required.
  • Recertification applications must be received by EACC no later than 60 days after your expiration date.

PDHs, CEUs and other credits are all acceptable toward CEAP® renewal if the content is EAP-related. You may equate CEUs or other credits to PDHs by determining the number of contact hours in each session, not including breaks. One PDH is equal to one (1) contact (clock) hour (e.g., a 3-hour session is worth 3.0 PDHs for recertification).

No PDH post approval of CEUs or other continuing education credits is necessary for recertification, post approval is only required for new CEAP® candidates.

PDHs are available at the EAPA Annual World Conference, online at the EAPA website Learning Center, or through your local EAPA Chapter. Many private trainers and companies also offer EACC PDH approved trainings. Home study and online courses are also acceptable.

Credits for recertification may also be earned through academic coursework in EAP-related topics, the presentation of EAP professional training sessions, and the writing and publication of articles in a recognized EAP journal.

Effective July 1, 2010, active CEAPs will earn PDH credit for membership in EAPA and/or other qualifying national or international EA professional associations or societies – 501(c) (3) or similar status: two (2) PDHs per year of active EAPA membership during a certification cycle and/or one (1) PDH per full year of active membership in other qualifying EA associations or societies during a certification cycle. The maximum number of PDHs to be earned from professional memberships per recertification cycle was established at six (6). (CEAP® candidates may not use PDHs from membership toward CEAP exam eligibility requirements.)

Membership in non-qualifying professional associations will not earn PDH credit. The list of additional qualifying EA professional associations or societies is:

  • APEAR- Asia Pacific Employee Assistance Roundtable;
  • EAEF- Employee Assistance European Forum;
  • IAEAPE- International Association of Employee Assistance Professionals in Education

To complete your recertification by PDH, choose one of the following two options:

A) Online Option: Complete the new online recertification on EAPA’s website, www.eapassn.org, with a credit card fee payment. (Choose the “Recertify Online” option from the Certification menu. Note: Your login is your last name; your password is your ID# preceded by an uppercase C.) Instructions are also on the website. Online recertification applications must be completed no later than 60 days past the CEAP expiration date. If you recertify online, do not send anything to EACC. However, be sure to keep your continuing education certificates (PDH/CEUs) in a file for the three years of your renewed certification in case of EACC audit.

B) Traditional Mail-In Option: Fill out the recertification application form, including current contact information, and list all PDHs / CEUs on the PDH Summary Log. (To keep track of hours, you may want to list trainings as they are earned on a Summary Log.) Attach the proof of completion (photocopies are acceptable) of your trainings and send everything to EACC with the recertification fees. If renewing at EAPA member rate, make sure membership is current. Recertification applications must be received no later than 60 days after CEAP® expiration date.

2) TO RECERTIFY BY CEAP® EXAMINATION RETESTING OPTION:
Complete the online CEAP® Exam Application, and submit with testing fee payment or download the form and send to EACC with the testing fee. You may pre-pay the final 3-year certification fee or wait and pay it after you pass the exam. No verification of completion of eligibility requirements is necessary when recertifying by exam.

You will receive a letter of eligibility within two to three weeks of receipt of your application with instructions for scheduling your examination at a convenient time and place. The CEAP® exam is offered by computer at over 200 sites in the U.S. and numerous international sites. The exam may be scheduled Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

When you pass your exam, be sure to send your final three-year certification fee to EACC to complete your certification process. Your CEAP® will not be renewed until all fees have been received.

Processing of renewals, whether by PDH or exam, including review, data entry, printing and mailing of new CEAP® certificates requires approximately six weeks from the date EACC receives your documents.

If you have any questions about recertification, please contact EACC via email at certdir@eapassn.org or by phone at (703) 387-1000, ext. 311.

REINSTATEMENT OF CEAP® CERTIFICATION

If a CEAP fails to submit his/her completed Recertification Application within the 60 days following his/her expiration date, CEAP® reinstatement is available in accordance with the following policy:

A CEAP who earned the required PDHs within the dates of his/her certification period but neglected to submit the Recertification Application with the required PDHs and fee has one year to apply for reinstatement. To be eligible for reinstatement, a completed Reinstatement Application with the required PDHs and appropriate recertification fees PLUS a $100.00 reinstatement fee must be received by the EACC within one year of the CEAP’s certification expiration date. After that time the only option is to again apply for and pass the CEAP® exam.

For instance, a CEAP with an expiration date of June 30, 2012, who earned the 60 required credits within his/her certification dates, would have until July 1, 2013, to apply for reinstatement. Please note that if you reinstate, your new certification period will begin in accordance with your last expiration date.

Lapsed Certification: Any lapsed CEAP may regain his/her certification by again passing the CEAP® exam. No eligibility requirements are necessary.

If you have any questions about recertification or reinstatement, please contact EACC via email at certdir@eapassn.org or by phone at (703) 387-1000, ext. 311.

Remember: Plan ahead for your next CEAP® recertification, and please notify EAPA if your contact information changes.
