Overview of CEAP Certification Process

  • Register as a CEAP Candidate to begin process
  • Complete prerequisites (if applicable) and submit documentation to obtain eligibility for Learning Modules
  • Complete CEAP Learning Modules 1-5 on the EAPA Institute Online Platform
  • Complete post-requisites (if applicable) and submit documentation to complete requirements
  • Pay 3-Year CEAP Activation Fee to obtain CEAP Credential

Overview of CEAP Certification Requirements

To earn the CEAP Credential, new CEAP candidates must meet prerequisite criteria under one of the following 4 CEAP Pathways:

  • Masters with Experience:  Candidate has a Master’s Degree in an approved clinical discipline and has completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) within 10 years preceding the date of CEAP certificate course application. 
    • Pre-requisite: NONE (Note: Proof of Degree and Work Experience must be submitted before purchasing access to the Online CEAP Learning Modules)
    • Post-requisite: NONE
  • No Masters with Experience: Candidate has less than a Master’s Degree in an approved clinical discipline and has completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) within 10 years preceding the date of CEAP certificate course application.  
    • Pre-requisite: 20 PDH’s on mental health and substance use assessment and referral (typically Domains II and III) within 3 years preceding the date of CEAP certification course application. (Note: PDH certificates and proof of Work Experience must be submitted before purchasing access to the Online CEAP Learning Modules)
    • Post-requisite: NONE
  • Masters with No Experience: Candidate has a Master’s Degree in an approved clinical discipline but has not completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) within 10 years preceding the date of CEAP certificate course application.  
    • Pre-requisite: 20 PDH’s on EA Service delivery (typically Domains I and II) within 3 years preceding the date of CEAP certification course application. (Note: Proof of Degree and PDH certificates must be submitted before purchasing access to the Online CEAP Learning Modules)
    • Post-requisite: Designated a CEAP Intern until completion of 500 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) or a combination of EAP work hours and up to 24 hours of group mentorship (see group mentorship guidelines and schedule) with qualified CEAPs (listed in the Verify a CEAP directory as being in good standing) within 2 years of completing the course. Additionally, 20 PDH’s (no domain requirement) per year to be completed.
  • All Other Candidates: Candidate does not have a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree and has not completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) within 10 years preceding the date of CEAP certificate course application. 
    • Pre-requisite: 40 PDH’s with 20 hours on EA Service delivery (typically Domains I and II) and 20 hours on mental health and substance use assessment and referral (typically Domains II and III) within 3 years preceding the date of CEAP certification course application.  (Note: All PDH certificates must be submitted before purchasing access to the Online CEAP Learning Modules) 
    • Post-requisite: Designated a CEAP Intern until completion of 500 hours of EAP work experience (paid or unpaid) or a combination of EAP work hours and up to 24 hours of group mentorship (see attached group mentorship guidelines and schedule) with qualified CEAPs (listed in the Verify a CEAP directory as being in good standing) within 2 years of completing the course. Additionally, 20 PDH’s (no domain requirement) per year to be completed.

Documentation Requirements Explained

  • Accepted EAP Work Experience Includes:
    • Employment (and/or internship) by a work organization’s internal employee assistance program or by an external EAP vendor; or
    • Affiliation by contract with an EAP to provide services to individual or organizational EAP clients.
  • EAP Work Experience Verification Documentation:
    • Employment/Internship: A letter on company letterhead from the candidate’s supervisor, manager or HR department is required to verify completion of the work experience requirement. Scanned letters are permissible. Resumes, job descriptions, etc. are not acceptable forms of verification.
    • Affiliation: Self-employed affiliates may write their own letter on their practice/company letterhead, and attest to completion of the EAP work experience requirement. EAP work includes direct EAP client contact hours, case management activities, EAP client follow-up, clinical consultation focused on EAP clients, workplace crisis response services, on-site services such as benefit fairs, delivering training on behalf of an EAP, and other EAP-specific activities. Scanned letters are permissible.
  • Accepted Advanced Clinical Degrees for the CEAP Include (Masters or Higher):
    • Addiction studies
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Educational Psychology
    • Social Work
    • Marriage & Family Therapy
  • Advanced Degree Verification Documentation: 
    • Candidates with any of the above advanced degrees need to submit a copy of their diploma to the EACC when applying to take the CEAP® Certification course. Candidates with advanced degrees that are not listed above, but who completed clinical coursework, may submit a copy of their diploma and a transcript for review by the EACC to determine whether their degree may qualify for the CEAP advanced degree prerequisite. 
  • EA Service Delivery Includes: 
    • Direct EAP client contact hours, case management activities, EAP client follow-up, clinical consultation focused on EAP clients, workplace crisis response services, on-site services such as benefit fairs, delivering training on behalf of an EAP, and other EAP-specific activities.
  • Domain Requirements: 
    • The CEAP Certification Course with its five learning modules will cover Domains I, II and III requirements. Rather the PDHs earned for Pre-Requisites and Post-Requisites must satisfy the requirements of 20 PDHs in EA Service Delivery (typically Domains I and II) and/or 20 PDHs in Mental Health and Substance Use Assessment & Referral (typically Domains II and III).


CEAP Learning Modules Course Description

This EACC approved course for CEAP certification covers the required three knowledge domains for the EA professional. This course presents a conceptual framework involved with Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) from a global perspective.
